Abstract

Forensic science education is a cornerstone of the criminal justice system, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to analyze physical evidence and contribute to the pursuit of justice. Despite its importance, the field faces persistent challenges, including inconsistent curricula, limited resources, and insufficient hands-on training. These issues can hinder the preparedness of graduates and the effectiveness of forensic practice.

This study was conducted to explore the challenges encountered in forensic science education and to propose practical solutions. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected from 30 senior criminology students and 15 forensic science educators across four higher education institutions in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, during the Academic Year 2023. Through interviews and focus group discussions, the research identified common challenges faced by both students and educators, alternative strategies students use to succeed, and recommendations from educators for improving instruction.

The findings revealed that students struggle with a lack of laboratory equipment, restricted access to practical experiences, and a disconnect between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Educators reported similar constraints, such as outdated facilities, large class sizes, and limited opportunities for professional development.       Despite these obstacles, students demonstrated resilience by focusing on foundational concepts, collaborating with peers, and utilizing alternative learning resources. Educators advocated for increased funding, continuous training, and institutional support to enhance forensic science education.

The study concludes that addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts among educators, administrators, and policymakers. By investing in resources, standardizing curricula, and fostering collaboration, institutions can better prepare students for the evolving demands of forensic science and strengthen the criminal justice system.
